Genealogy
What is Genealogy? There are a lot of people with different definitions. It can be categorized as a collection of people. I like to collect ancestors and family members not just names and dates. I started my trek because of a wise man named Grandpa Brown. He asked me at a very young age to start researching his good people. His mother is a Williford and he grew up with stories of these great noble people coming from across the pond. I have researched this name and found wonderful new friends along the way. He is the reason we have the term Momma's Boy.
As I matured in age and followed the path of getting to know my ancestors I came to the realization that writing a journal is a great idea! I like to keep a written journal and a photo journal. Sometimes words can't say enough about something, but a photo can. I married my best friend and together we started a family. Along the way we decided to home school our children. There were so many opportunities to teach with history. It was fun to find out what our ancestors were doing at the time major events were happening in the United States. When one of my sons was 9 years old we were studying Thomas Jefferson and found out that he had red hair and freckles. He was also a jokester. My son enjoyed learning about the similarities between Thomas Jefferson and himself. My son is now 16 and attending college to get his masters degree in Microbiology.
In our home studies we spent time getting to know our kindred not just looking to gather names and dates. When you research you need to know about the times and the places your family lived in. Sometimes you won't be able to find exact records on your person, so look for information to help you understand their lives. Sharing your findings is a good way to help and get help. Spelling wasn't the most important thing when it came to census takers. You need to be sure to look for names that sound like your family name. One of the families in my line is named BIGGS. They are found under the following spellings: Baggs, Bigs, Beggs, Buggs, Boggs and Bags. When you find a group of people on a census that is in your line, be sure to look over the pages before and after that one. Many times people would move with communities to the new place out west. This is fortunate for us because we can find other family members living close.
I could go on and on about this, but I won't. I want you to get the most from your visit here and return often to see what else I have found.
